When you think about taking your first steps in golf, it may seem like you need a lot of equipment and knowledge. But to be honest, what you need most at the beginning is will and time. You can rent golf clubs at any course, and the same goes for practice balls. That makes it easy to get started. It is highly recommended that you take a beginner golf course, as there is a lot of information, and with a professional teacher you will make faster and better progress. Well, let's say you already know the basics... Now what?
Once you understand the basic stroke and theory, the next question comes up: what do you need to truly enter the world of golf?
Appropriate clothing

Most golf courses have a dress code. This usually means a polo shirt, sporty long pants or shorts, and golf shoes. Some courses, such as Golf Center Stanežiče, are not strict about clothing, but elsewhere you will have to follow the rules. Common prohibited items include jeans, sandals, collarless/sleeveless shirts, shorts, sweatpants... Proper clothing is not only important for etiquette, but also for comfort and freedom of movement when hitting the ball.
Golf clubs
You don't have to buy a whole set for your first steps. There are two options:
Used clubs: a great choice to see if golf is really the right sport for you.
Starter set: If you have the budget, you might consider buying a new kit. Prices usually start around 400 euros.
The key is to have some basic clubs to practice with. Later, once golf becomes part of your routine, you can invest in more specialized equipment.
Golf license
If you want to play on groomed courses, you will need to pass a golf exam. This is proof that you know the rules of the game and can play at a reasonable pace. 👉 You can read more about this in my blog Why do I need a golf license?
Mandatory basic equipment
Once you pass the exam, you will need a few more tools that you can't do without on the field:
Balls: You'll lose more at the start, so it's worth choosing the cheaper packages.
Golf glove: For better grip and fewer blisters.
Golf shoes: Provide stability and traction on the grass.
Pitch forks: Use them to repair the indentations left by the ball on the green. This is the basis of golf culture.
Marker: A small chip that you use to mark your ball on the green.
Tees: Used on the initial shot on each hole.
In addition, a golf bag, which is often included in starter sets, also comes in handy.
How to choose the right course
Choosing the right course is key to your progress. Different courses offer different challenges. Some are suitable for beginners, while others are more challenging. Before you make a decision, research which courses are available in your area. You may want to visit several courses to find the one that suits you best.
First steps on the course
When you first hit the course, it's important to feel comfortable. Remember that golf is a game that requires patience. Don't worry too much about how well you play. Focus on enjoying the game and socializing with other players. Your first few shots may not be perfect, but that's part of learning.
Conclusion
Getting started in golf is much easier than it might seem at first glance. You need willpower, time, basic clothing and a few clubs. Once you have a golf license and acquired the basic equipment, you will be ready to enjoy the game.
